The Real McCoy

Authenticity. We all want it: in our relationships, in our careers, from our leaders and in our choices as consumers. Marketers everywhere hope to build authenticity into their communication with their customers and clients. But, it’s not always easy to find it or be true.

In my travels and speaking engagements, it’s great to be able to share knowledge about techniques and tactics, but the best part of my job is when I hear real stories from real people that reflect real experiences. I’m lucky to meet many people who are leaders in their field—printers, sales reps, technicians, designers, photographers and illustrators. Their stories, like their work, help me understand what clients want and how Sappi can best supply solutions to their needs. Their input helps me know what to talk about, how to talk about it, and how to help clients get the information that they need and want. Sometimes I get a chance to celebrate those encounters by highlighting those real stories and sharing authentic people with others—like when I work with Trish Witkowski from foldfactory.com or acknowledge the AIGA Medalists Cheryl Heller and Dana Arnett. At the upcoming HOW Design Live in Boston, Bob Gill, the renowned designer, illustrator, art director, filmmaker and writer —to name just a few of his past and current roles—will be talking to the assembled creative folks about originality and culture. Being true revolves around the idea that observation and experience not only lead to better communication, but can also help win the battle against preconceptions. In short, how to succeed in the quest for authenticity. At Sappi, we recently worked with Bob Gill to recreate one of his iconic illustrations and printed a limited-edition poster on McCoy Silk which will be available at HOW Design Live. Come see us at Sappi’s booth #418 to check it out. It seems like a great idea—the real McCoy on Sappi’s real McCoy, one of the best papers when it comes to the ultimate tactile and print experience. And Bob Gill—he is absolutely the real McCoy. Does this make sense?
